-2011 Sendai earthquake- Higashi Nihon Dai-Shinsai
This megathrust earthquake of magnitude 9.0 created tsunami waves of up to 10 meters (33 ft).The earthquake hypocenter was reported to be off the Oshika Peninsula, the east coast of Tōhoku on 11 March 2011, at 5:46 UTC (14:46 local time) at a depth of 24.4 kilometers (15.2 mi).
News reports indicate that 3,676 people have died and another 7,558 are missing.
Estimates of magnitude make it the largest earthquake to hit Japan and among the top five largest earthquakes in the world since seismological record-keeping began.
